Fundraiser Raises Money for the PRCUA
Education Fund, Inc.
(Photos)
On Saturday,
November 14, the PRCUA Social Hall was filled with the aroma of
delicious food coming from the first Golabki Demonstration that was
held as a fundraiser for the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. Participants
included those who knew how to make these delicious stuffed cabbage
rolls but wanted to learn new techniques and also by those who had
no idea how to prepare golabki. Employees of the Red Apple
Restaurant, owned is Anna Hebal, demonstrated preparation of the
food and Mark Kroplewski, a PRCUA member, explained the step-by-step
procedure of stuffing and rolling the cabbage leaves.
Each participant
was shown how to make golabki with meat and without meat and also
how to make mushroom sauce and a tomato-based sauce. After the
demonstration, everyone had the opportunity to taste both types of
golabki. So that participants would not forget what they learned, a
booklet with a variety of recipes was given to those in attendance.
Special thanks are
extended to Anna Hebal, Barbara and Jaroslawa from Red Apple
Restaurant and PRCUA member, Mark Kroplewski for giving of their
time and making this Golabki Demonstration possible. We also
appreciate the volunteers who helped in various capacities: Mark
Sorbi, Halina Bieniewska, Pam Tuytens, Kasia Derus, Felicia
Krupinski, Wallace Ozog and Joann Ozog.
On Sunday, November
15 the PRCUA Social Hall was buzzing with children and adults
intensely gluing, cutting, painting and creating ornaments that they
will proudly display in their homes this year. The Christmas
Ornament Workshops consisted of two, 2-hour sessions in which the
participants created an ornament using a blown out egg, another
using the Polish art of paper cutting, called Wycinanki, a third
painted ornament and a paper St. Nicholas and a Nativity set.
Door prizes were
given out, a raffle was held and Polish and non-Polish items were
available for purchase. This workshop got the people into the
Christmas spirit, was very relaxing and brought out much creativity.
Everyone enjoyed themselves and we have many people to thank who
made this workshop possible: teachers - Maria Grzadziel, Lidia
Kowalewicz and Stasia Gasior and volunteers - Bogusia Yon, Felicia
Krupinski, Mark Sorbi, Halina Biniewska, Kasia Wolan, Wally Ozog and
Joann Ozog.
It was because of
the cooperation of all of these workers and their willingness to
help that the Golabki Demonstration and the Christmas Ornament
Workshop, along with a raffle and the sale of Polish and non-Polish
items netted a profit of $1,015 for the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc.
We greatly appreciate all of the PRCUA members and non-members who
supported this fundraiser and, at the same time, learned something
about their Polish heritage.

With Narod Polski now being a monthly newspaper and my column being
published every second month, I lose track of the information that I
write about. I used to write an article for each month. For this
article I have included the months of November and December.
On November 6,
the long awaited Re-opening of the Paderewski Room took place. If
you have not seen this room that depicts Paderewski as a pianist,
composer, statesman, and humanitarian, please come and visit. I have
compiled an activity workbook on the life of Ignacy Paderewski, with
assistance from Kathryn Rosypal. The workbook is free, but postage
is $1.50 for one book and 50 cents for each additional book. You can
save postage by picking up the books from the PRCUA Home Office in
Chicago. To order workbooks, make check payable to PRCUA and send
to: Ignacy Paderewski Workbook, 984 N. Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL
60642.
On the weekend of
November 14 and 15, two successful events were held – a Golabki
Demonstration and a workshop on Christmas Ornaments. Participants
got in the Christmas spirit and at the same time, learned many
different ways of preparing golabki. They also used their creativity
in making ornaments and a Nativity set. All proceeds went to benefit
the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. I thank the instructors, volunteers
and participants for their interest and support.
My husband and I
attended the 80th Anniversary of the Polish Highlanders on the
evening of November 15. The hall was filled to capacity and many
dignitaries from Poland were present. Congratulations are extended
to the President of the Highlanders, Stanley Zagata, who is also a
PRCUA member and to all the members who have worked very hard for
many years for the good of Polonia.
On Saturday,
November 21, the PRCUA Cinderella and Prince Charming Ball took
place. It is always nice to see so many young ladies and gentlemen
participate. It takes hard work and dedication on the part of many -
from young adults to parents to organizers. People say that youth
are not involved in Polonia but, if you look around, many of the
younger generation do participate in the activities offered by our
fraternal. We must work together to encourage more of our youth to
be active. They are our future!
December began
with the PRCUA Senior meeting. The seniors got a surprise visit from
Mrs. Claus (Felicia Krupinski) and St. Nicholas (PRCUA member,
Walter Dynowski) who presented each senior with a Christmas gift.
The seniors played Bingo and then enjoyed a delicious Christmas
Buffet. All PRCUA members are invited to join them!
The annual
meeting of the PRCUA Board of Directors took place on December 3-5
followed by the PRCUA Illinois-Indiana Women’s Division Oplatek.
There were several events happening that day, so the crowd was
small. However, those in attendance had a delicious meal, good
companionship, an enjoyable show performed by Wesoly Lud, as well as
a surprise appearance by Santa Claus and the opportunity to win a
variety of raffle prizes. A special thank you is extended to
National Director Krystyna Lech for putting her time and effort into
chairing this traditional Polish Christmas event.
On Saturday,
December 12, my husband and I attended the Oplatek hosted by our
fellow fraternal, Polish Women’s
Alliance. It was held at Przybylo’s White Eagle Banquet Hall in
Niles. It
was a lovely event with approximately 120 people in attendance. We
shared oplatek with people from different organizations, had a
delicious meal and sang Christmas carols. We thank Dr. Lidia Filus
for chairing this event.
That same evening
we went to
Northeastern
Illinois
University
for a beautiful Christmas program of song and dance by our own
District 7 PRCUA Polish Folk Ensemble, POLONIA. The students had
colorful costumes, wore smiles on their faces and performed with
much enthusiasm. It was a very relaxing and beautiful evening. We
thank Anna Krysinski (Director), Pani Celina (Choreographer), the
children and their parents for their interest in bringing this
enjoyable Polish Christmas performance to the community.
Due to previous
commitments in
Michigan,
my husband and I were unable to attend Christmas programs by Wesoly
Lud Folk Ensemble, Southwest Center of Polish Dancing and the
Pope
John Paul II Polish School of Lemont, and the Polonia Dance Ensemble
of District 8. We are always very proud of the hard work and
dedication that the Directors, teachers, students and parents put
forth in promoting their Polish heritage and we wish them continuous
success in 2010.
On Sunday,
December 13, my husband and I, National Director of District 9
Elizabeth Grabowski and her daughter, Agata, Barbara Pawlowski,
Grace Biestek and her daughter Nicole and Bogusia Tippy visited the
St. Joseph Carmelite Home in Munster, IN, which is a home for
children from broken homes. This was the second year that we brought
a monetary donation and gifts for the children. My 96-year-old
mother crocheted hats, scarves and baby afghans. There were toys,
books, baby products and kolaczki baked by Mrs. Grabowski. We had
the opportunity to see some pre-schoolers who gave us a sense of
satisfaction and happiness that we are helping such needy children.
Our holidays
began in Michigan on December 18 with a Birthday Party at the
American
Polish
Cultural Center for our son, Mark. This was the first time in 20
years that Mark was home on his birthday to celebrate with family
and friends. On December 22, we celebrated the 96th birthday of my
mother – Victoria Kushel. She lives alone and still has a lot of
spunk in her. Christmas is a time for family and we did have the
opportunity to visit with many of our relatives, young and old
alike.
On a sad note, I
extend my deepest sympathy to my good friend, Bernice Adamkiewicz,
on the passing of her oldest son, Greg. Bernice replaced me as
Financial Secretary of Pope John Paul II Society when we moved to
Lemont,
IL. Our sympathy is also extended to my #1 helper,
Felicia Krupinski, who buried her daughter, Renee Lameka – an only
child - during the holidays. Felicia devoted many hours to
volunteering at the
Polish Museum
and, during a 10-year period, she assisted in raising over one
million dollars for the PMA. For the past 2 years she has
volunteered her time in helping to raise over $55,000 for the PRCUA
Education Fund, Inc. Please remember these two dear ladies in your
prayers, so God will give them strength during this most difficult
time. And pray that the beloved deceased may rest in eternal peace.
I would like to
thank all of the donors who supported the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc.
Christmas Campaign (see separate article). I know the times are hard
for many however, whatever you give, big or small, is greatly
appreciated.
I hope that all
PRCUA members and friends had an enjoyable and blessed Christmas. My
husband and I thank all of you who sent us gifts and cards. We wish
everyone a healthy, prosperous and happy 2010.
My next article
will cover January, February and March. Stay warm! Until next time!

(Photos) October was Polish
American Month and with it came many events that celebrated the
heritage of the Polish American Community. On October 4, my husband
and I attended the 64th annual Pulaski/Polish Heritage Dinner
sponsored by Polish American Congress (PAC), Western Pennsylvania
Division at the Radisson Hotel in Green Tree, Pennsylvania. This
year, Ruth and Richard Orlowski, long time PRCUA members were
recognized for their work in Polonia. Richard was on the PRCUA Board
of Directors for 12 years and many other committees. Ruth was always
behind him, quiet, supportive and helping out wherever she could. We
congratulate Ruth and Richard for their involvement in PRCUA and
Polonia and may they continue to contribute to the good of Polonia.
On Tuesday, October
6 the PRCUA Seniors gathered at the PRCUA Social Hall where they
were treated to candy, pretzels and a Halloween figurine. Michaeline
Drust came and observed the morning’s events and we hope that she
will decide to become a member and be part of this happy group. Hope
to see more PRCUA members. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of
each month in the PRCUA Social Hall.
On October 8 and 9,
the Michigan Fraternal Congress (MFC) and the Michigan Fraternal
Insurance Counselors held its annual meeting, “Fraternal Dollars at
Work in Michigan” in East Lansing Michigan. This meeting consisted
of classes on continuing education for sales agents to receive
credit towards their certification. Those PRCUA agents involved were
Robert Bielenda, Julius Szymczyk, Teresa Gibala and President
Wallace Ozog. Home office employee, Agnes Migiel sat in on the
classes to be informed on the Michigan rules and regulations for
selling Life Insurance.
New officers were
elected, inspirational people spoke, MFC 2009 scholarship recipients
were announced, the Fraternalist of the Year Award was presented and
two service projects, one on making cards for Ronald McDonald House
and the other Blankets for City Rescue Mission were held. Amanda
Paryaski, PRCUA member, was one of the MFC Scholarship recipients. I
was one of the nominees representing PRCUA for the Fraternalist of
the Year award. This was a surprise and a privilege. I have
volunteered the past 10 years for the Polish Museum of America and
presently, for the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. fundraisers. I feel
that my volunteering is important but it is different than the
volunteering of other fraternals, whereby, they paint homes, feed
hundreds of people or donate food and clothing to those in need.
Over $5,000.00 in
food products and miscellaneous items were collected by those
fraternals present. The recipients of these donations were Advent
House, City Rescue Mission and Ronald McDonald House. A special
thanks is given to Michigan National Directors, Barbara Toboy, Tom
Lisiecki and the Michigan Dance schools for their generous donations
of over $2,000.00 of items that they collected for these worthy
charitable organizations. Many of the fraternals presented boards
with photos that showed their “Fraternalism in Action”. An auction
was held, as well as, raffles for the benefit of their scholarship
fund. Beside myself, other PRCUA members present who attended
lectures or participated in the workshops were Walter Gibala,
Bernice Adamkiewicz and Eleanor Bielenda.
We returned to
Chicago for a meeting on Saturday October 10 for a continuing
education class for Illinois sale agents at the home office.
Approximately, 15 agents attended this class in order to keep their
licenses updated.
That same day my
cousin, Marcella Groulx and her daughter, Karen visited me.
Marcella’s mother, Vicky Burek was a very active member in Utica New
York. After talking about family, Marcella and her daughter were
given a tour of PRCUA offices, PMA Library and the Great Hall. I am
always happy to show PRCUA and PMA to our family, friends and
members. If ever in the Chicago area, please call and let me know.
Saturday, October
10 was a very busy day because a third event that took place in the
Great Hall of the Museum was the discussion and book signing of
“Beyond the Uprising-A Polish Girl’s Journey” by Cynthia Grant
Bowman. The subject of the biography is Maria Chudzinska, well known
in the Chicago Polish community. This is a story about a charming
and resourceful Polish girl from a privileged background whose
youth, education and subsequent life were interrupted and
transformed by WW II. Like so many others, she participated in a
passionate but tragic battle for her country, and lost everything,
her family, her home, her lifestyle and her country. Her struggle to
find herself as an émigré and to create a life for herself in a new
country reflects the courage and resourcefulness of her whole
generation. Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down
until I finished it. I enjoyed it very much because I learned
something about a very friendly and gracious lady whom I first met
when I moved to Chicago. Little did I realize the background that
she came from nor the trials and hardships that she endured and yet,
for all that she has gone through a smile is always on her face.
This book will make a beautiful gift. It will give the reader a
sense that we may have hardships in our lives but others have worse
ones and yet, they are able to conquer them. You can purchase the
book at the PMA Gift shop.
This year the
Polish American Congress (PAC) held its conference October 15 and 16
in Chicago Illinois titled “The PAC Community in the 21st Century,
Challenges and Opportunities.” Participants came from all over the
United States and Poland to hear panelists speak on a variety of
topics. It was a time to listen to the youth and to ethnic
organizations, to be informed on ways of preserving and promoting
Polish culture and heritage in the U.S., to discover what networking
is all about, to find ways of getting involved in political
opportunities and to learn about business ties with Poland. The
Conference concluded with the annual PAC meeting on Saturday October
17 with delegates from all over the U.S.
After the National
PAC meeting, my husband and I drove to Michigan to attend the 95th
Anniversary of the Central Citizens Committee. This committee was
formed in 1914 in Detroit Michigan to send aid to Poland in the form
of relief packages and money and to help speed Poland’s
independence. Each year this organization honors individuals and
organizations for their work in Polonia. Congratulations are
extended to PRCUA Choreographer, Tomasz Kielar for being one of the
recipients and also Orchard Lake Schools for their 100 years on the
shores of Orchard Lake and 125 years since its founding.
On Saturday October
24, the PRCUA Executive Officers, President Wallace Ozog,
Vice-President Anna Sokolowski and Secretary/Treasurer Joyce
Szarowicz met with the Alliance of Poles/Division of PRCUA Board of
Directors in Cleveland Ohio. On Sunday October 25, President Ozog
and Vice-President Sokolowski met with the Task Force in Chicago.
The last week of
October ended with the Board of Directors meeting of the PMA whereby
Board members were reduced almost in half. That same evening the
Kosciusko Foundation/Chicago Chapter had a program in the Great Hall
of the Museum in honor of Tadeusz Kosciusko’s name day. There were
speeches, readings, and entertainment by PRCUA Polonia Dancers and
also a violin performance by the young students of the Paderewski
Orchestra.
On Friday October
30 the PRCUA and PMA employees gathered together in the PRCUA Social
Hall to celebrate Halloween. At this time, the winners of the
Employee Category of the Polish American Heritage Polish Custom
Essay contest were also announced. Congratulations are extended to
Home Office Employees, Kasia Budzyn and Agnes Migiel who tied for
first place and Anna Wolan who came in second. Thank you to the
employees from all PRCUA offices that took the time to share their
favorite custom.
October ended with
an Underwriting Seminar by Optimum Re in Dallas Texas from October
31 to November 3. President Ozog and PRCUA Employee, Agnes Migiel
attended and heard lectures on medical problems that those who apply
for insurance have, such as, Diastolic Dysfunction, Type 2 Diabetes,
Hepatitis B and C, Sleep Apnea and Crohn’s Disease. The seminar
concluded with “What’s New in Research and Development.”
As a special treat,
all participants had a special tour and dinner at the “New Dallas
Cowboy’s Stadium.” We had a behind the scenes tour of the press box,
the team’s locker room, the announcer’s box and the best part,
walking on the field and kicking a football. It was a very
interesting and exciting event that we will remember for years to
come.
October was a very
busy month that had many events celebrating our heritage.
Individuals were honored who proudly show their heritage through
involvement in the community. Informational conferences and meetings
were held that presented to organizations and individuals ideas that
will assist them in promoting their heritage and their organization.
May these heritage awards, meetings and events be incentives for
others to work for the good of Polonia. Until next time!
The Polish American
Community in the 21st Century,
Challenges and Opportunities
The Polish American
Community gathered together October 15 and 16 at Northeastern
Illinois University, Chicago Illinois to discuss Challenges and
Opportunities in the 21st Century. Participants came from all over
the United States and many dignitaries also came from Poland.
The Conference
opened with a welcome by Frank Spula, President of Polish American
Congress (PAC) and Polish National Alliance and Dr. Carla Knorowski,
President for Institutional Advancement at Northeastern Illinois
University. Several representatives extended greetings, including
Hon. Richard M. Daley, Mayor of Chicago. Mayor Daley stated that
Chicago, a diverse city, is proud of the Polish Community where the
Polish people worked hard to build their community of homes and
churches and shopping districts. Many have moved out to the suburbs,
however several have remained because they see the value of living
in and near the city.
The first panel
discussion that took place was on “Today’s Polish American
Community”. During this discussion, it was brought out that the
Polish population is not growing like the American population
because fewer people are leaving Poland to come to America. It was
also brought out that the Polish Americans are better educated than
the general public. They are likely to hold more professional and
management positions. Because they are wealthier, they are more
likely to own their own homes. Discussion also took place on the
importance of the 2010 Census for funding purposes and the
importance of writing the word POLISH under race. It was stated that
the single most important issue in US Polish relations is the visa
waiver for Polish citizens.
The session on
“Leadership in the Polish American Community” began with a
discussion on leadership. It was stated that an institution or an
organization falls and rises on the basis of leadership. A leader is
creative, innovative, trustworthy, courageous, visionary and a team
builder. A leader gets things done with the help of others whereby
all work as a team.
PRCUA Employee,
Jennifer Crissey, spoke on “Passing the Torch”. She stated that it
is difficult for leaders to let go of power and that they must learn
to welcome change. The younger generation will make mistakes just
like the older generation, however leaders should not criticize them
but should correct them and encourage them. Jennifer also stated
that key leaders can be found within an organization and it is such
individuals that understand the organization better than outsiders.
She also said that it is important to put young people on Boards in
order for them to receive hands on experience.
Other speakers
spoke on the “School of Leaders” whereby youth are recruited and
educated in the row of leadership and Quo Vadis I, the 2009 School
of Leaders Conference held in Poland this past summer. Its purpose
was to bridge the gap between the younger and older generations of
Polonia and to establish a network of students, graduates and young
professionals to meet the hard-hitting challenges of tomorrow and to
become our future leaders.
Information was
also given on Quo Vadis II that will take place in Windsor Ontario
Canada May 7-9, 2010 for those between the ages of 18 and 35. For
further information, go to
www.QuoVadisConference.com.
The session on
“Building Community Through Sports” emphasized the fact that sports
bring people together, bring families together and can be used as
fundraisers for charitable causes. Information was also given on the
Polish National Alliance (PNA) Soccer Academy in Chicago Illinois,
the city of Poznan in Poland that is the best in sports for children
and youth and the Chicago Park District.
“Future of Polonia-Organizational
Challenges and Opportunities” pointed out the importance of
individuals being involved. However, they must work together in the
same direction or they will fall because in unity there is strength.
New directions and ideas are necessary, especially to get the youth
involved. For the younger student, there are Polish language and
dance schools. For the University student, there is very little or
nothing. Programs must be established to attract the youth, to
arouse their curiosity, to give them knowledge and to make them
excited.
It was also stated
that our ancestors did not find Polonia for it to disappear. A new
public presence needs to be created. Polonia must be heard in
mainstream media, return to the public arena, be part of everyday
news and Polish culture must be incorporated into the culture of
Polonia.
Other sessions were
“Education Partnerships: Teaching and Learning”, “Role and
Importance of Ethnic Organizations”, “Poland Business Ties”,
“Political Opportunities: Getting Involved, Being Active” and
“Networking in the Community”. There were several informational
tables set up that promoted various organizations.
After the last
session on Friday, the dedication of a bust of Lech Walesa took
place in Walesa Hall. The bust was donated by the Polish Arts Club
of Chicago Illinois under the Presidency of Dr. Vivian Walkosz. A
Lech Walesa Endowment Fund was established at Northeastern
University through the generous donation of many individuals and
organizations. The Platinum Founding Donors Plaque with the Donors’
names was also unveiled at this time.
This two day
Conference on the “Challenges and Opportunities of the Polish
American Community in the 21st Century was a gathering of Poles and
Polish Americans and the young and old. It was a time to hear the
youth and to find ways of getting them involved. It brought out the
importance of good leaders and also the importance of working
together within an organization and with other ethnic organizations.
It stressed the need for cooperation with Polish media, as well as,
American media. It emphasized the fact that financial funds are
needed to implement many projects. It brought out the need for
working together with Poland and vice versa. This conference brought
out many challenges and opportunities. Will the Polish American
Community in the 21st century accept them and work for the good of
our ethnic heritage?

(Photos) With the month of
September comes changing colors of the leaves on the trees, cooler
weather and the arrival of fall. At the PRCUA home office, September
began with the monthly meeting of the PRCUA Seniors on Tuesday,
September 1. President Fred Tuytens, treated the seniors to a lunch
of Ball Park franks with all of the trimmings and some of the
members so generously provided a variety of delicious desserts.
During the colder weather, this is a good way of getting out of the
house, socializing with many delightful members and enjoying playing
Bingo. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month in the
PRCUA Social Hall, 984 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago Illinois.
My husband and I
traveled to Michigan for Labor Day weekend. We visited with
relatives and we participated in the Hamtramck Labor Day Parade.
This year President Ozog was Grand Marshal of the parade leading the
Michigan PRCUA Dance groups. It was a time of seeing many friends
and a time to show pride in our Polish heritage.
The PRCUA Board of
Directors held their quarterly meeting in Milwaukee Wisconsin
September 11 and 12. The Board of Directors had the opportunity to
visit the Wisconsin Satellite Office and also to meet the new Office
Manager, Michelle Ewald. We welcome Michelle as one of the newest
members of the PRCUA family.
On Sunday,
September 13, my husband and I attended the 6th annual Benefit
Dinner of the Bishop Abramowicz Seminary at the Sheraton Chicago
hotel. Almost 300 people were in attendance. Present at this event
were Cardinal Francis George, Most Rev. Thomas Paprocki, Aux. Bishop
of Chicago, Most Rev. Thad Jakubowski, Aux. Bishop Emeritus of
Chicago and priests from various parishes.
This year the
seminary honored Edward Sowin with the annual “Caritas Christi
Award” that is presented to a person, parish, group or institution
that best exemplifies the openness to diversity in ministry,
sensitivity to culture and giving of self and services to Polonia
and the Archdiocese of Chicago.
We still
experienced weather in the 90’s when we flew to San Antonio Texas
September 17-19 for the 123rd NFCA meeting (National Fraternal
Congress of America). President Wallace Ozog, Vice-President Anna
Sokolowski and Employee Jennifer Crissey attended the informational
workshops and during free time visited the many historical sites. My
husband and I enjoyed our visit to Panna Maria Texas, the oldest
Polish settlement in the USA. We had the opportunity to meet Elaine
Moczygemba, a relative of Fr. Leopold Moczygemba who founded this
settlement. It was a pleasure to personally meet Elaine because we
have previously corresponded through mail. Since time was limited,
she gave us a brief tour of this famous landmark. It is interesting
to note that the Polish Museum of America that is located in the
PRCUA building has the Stations of the Cross from the first church
built at Panna Maria Texas and the church at Panna Maria Texas has
the altar from St. Stanislaus Parish in Chicago.
On Saturday,
September 26, a PRCUA Deputy meeting was held at the home office for
sales agents from Kansas, Texas, Nebraska, Delaware and Michigan.
President Wallace Ozog, Vice-President Anna Sokolowski and
Secretary-Treasurer Joyce Szarowicz welcomed them. President Ozog
and Membership and Sales Personnel, Agnes Migiel Lubieslski
conducted the meeting. This was the first time that these agents
visited the home office. They received information on the new
programs, were treated to a Polish lunch catered by Kasia’s Deli and
received a tour of the PRCUA office and also the Polish Museum. It
was a pleasure to meet these agents and hope that they will continue
to promote PRCUA and its products in their states.
On Sunday,
September 27, my husband and I attended the 12th annual Fund Raising
Dinner for the Fathers and Brothers of the Congregation of the
Resurrection (CR’S). This benefit supports the Senior Religious,
Novices, Seminarians and Brothers-in-Formation for the CR’s, US
province. Over 300 people attended this event that was supported by
many parishes.
Three awards were
presented at this dinner. “The Vision of Hope Award” was presented
to the Friends of the Resurrection, Resurrection parish, Woodstock
Illinois for partnering with the Resurrection Fathers and Brothers
in providing service to the Catholic Church. “The Veritas et Caritas
Award” was presented to Rev. Anthony Dziorek, CR, Pastor of St.
Stanislaus B and M, Chicago Illinois for working for the
Congregation and promoting the Resurrection’s ministry to God’s
people. “The Resurrection Merit Award” was presented to individuals
from twelve parishes for their dedication to the mission of the
Congregation of the Resurrection in a parish, a school, a retreat
center or a mission.
Congratulations are
extended to all of the honorees and may they continue to support and
work for the Congregation of the Resurrection.
September ended
with the gathering of PRCUA employees, PMA employees and volunteers
to celebrate President Ozog’s birthday with a luncheon. September
sure flew by and before you know it, it will be Christmas.
October is Polish
American Heritage Month. I hope that many of our PRCUA members are
finalizing their essays on their favorite Polish custom that they
celebrate with their family. Deadline is October 15.
I am inviting our
PRCUA members and friends to attend our Workshops in November. A
“Golabki (stuffed cabbage) Demonstration Workshop” will be held on
Saturday, November 14 and a “Getting in the Spirit of Christmas
Workshop” will take place on Sunday, November 15. Bring your adult
family and friends on Saturday and/or Sunday! Bring your children
and grandchildren on Sunday! This is a way for children and adults
to have fun and at the same time learn about their Polish heritage.
Also, you will be helping the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. All
proceeds will go toward this fund. For further information, go to
“Calendar of Events” on my website. Until next time!
123rd National Fraternal Congress of
America Meeting Held in Texas
The 123rd National
Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) meeting,” Blazing New Trails”
was held in San Antonio Texas September 17-19. National President
Wallace M. Ozog, National Vice-President Anna Sokolowski and
Employee Jennifer Crissey attended this meeting.
There were many
inspirational and educational speakers, workshops on innovative
ideas, a very motivational community service activity where
one-hundred volunteers came together and painted ten rooms in three
hours at a Family Service Agency and the presentation of various
awards to individuals and organizations who exhibited extraordinary
acts of fraternalism, provided superb leadership and outstanding
volunteer service in the community.
There was also a
time of fun and relaxation whereby the participants had the
opportunity to socialize and speak with others fraternalists at a
“Welcoming Reception”, a dinner tour of the Alamo, and ending with a
closing reception and dinner where you saw many dressed in Texas
attire of jeans, cowboy hats and boots.
Some of the topics
covered were “Creating a Relevant Fraternal Benefit Society in the
21st Century”, “Bringing Your Society’s Bylaws into the 21st
Century”,” Fraternal Mergers”, “The Federal Income Tax Exemption for
Fraternal Benefit Societies”, “Giving Generations XYZ a Seat at the
Table”.
PRCUA Employee,
Jennifer Crissey had the opportunity to attend this meeting because
the NFCA offered two partial scholarships for the younger generation
and Jennifer was one of the recipients. Congratulations to Jennifer!
Before departing
back to Chicago, President and Mrs. Ozog visited Panna Maria Texas,
the oldest Polish settlement in the United States. Fr. Leopold
Moczygemba and about one hundred Silesian families from Pluznica and
surrounding villages of Silesia Poland founded Panna Maria Texas. In
1855, they built their first church, Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, dedicated to the Virgin Mother, that was destroyed by
lightning in 1875. They rebuilt the church in 1877 and in 1937, the
present church was enlarged.
President and Mrs.
Ozog had the opportunity to meet Fr. Mariusz Lazarek, Administrator
of the Parish, as well as, Elaine Moczygemba who gave us a tour of
the settlement. It was very interesting, enjoyable and exciting to
see the oldest Polish settlement in the United States. In the Great
Hall of the Polish Museum of America in Chicago Illinois hangs the
original Stations of the Cross from Panna Maria Texas and in
Immaculate Conception Church in Panna Maria Texas stands the altar
from St. Stanislaus Church, Chicago Illinois.
The NFCA meeting in
Texas gave our PRCUA delegates the opportunity to meet and talk with
members of other fraternals about their respective organizations,
their problems and their solutions. It also gave them the
opportunity to attend workshops that addressed current critical
areas of fraternal management and operations with the hope that they
will be inspired to use these tools, education and ideas to “Blaze
New Trails” in our organization.
PRCUA President Ozog is Hamtramck
Parade Grand Marshal
(Photos) Hamtramck,
Michigan celebrated the end of summer with its Annual Polish Day
Festival and Parade that marched down Joseph Campau Street on Labor Day,
Monday, September 7. The weather was nice – rain was predicted but it
held off until after the parade. Organizers reported that the crowd in
attendance was the largest it’s been in the past five years.
Wallace Ozog, National President of PRCUA
was the Grand Marshal of the Parade. Although Mr. Ozog currently resides
in Lemont, Illinois, his permanent residence has been and still is in
Warren, Michigan. The PRCUA was well represented in the Parade with
National Vice President Robert Bielenda and his wife Eleanor, National
Directors of District #10 Barbara Toboy and Thomas Lisiecki and students
from the following dance schools: Polskie Maki, Rogalin, Opole,
Wieliczka, Zajaczek, Gwiazda, Halka and Zakopane. Also, walking in the
parade were PRCUA members Bernice Adamkiewicz, Julius Szymczyk, the
Grabowski Family, Marge Zaharias and Tom and Donna Skurski. PRCUA First
Lady Joann Ozog, Eleanor Bielenda, wife of PRCUA Vice President Robert
Bielenda and Carolyn Meleski, President of Friends of Polish Art, rode
in a convertible owned and driven by Jodie Meyers.
The crowd along the parade route was
enthusiastic; it was nice to see so many children, teens and young
adults participating and it was a great way to end the summer.

(Photos) August began with a
great celebration! Our oldest son, Michael turned 40 and his
father-in-law, Artaki Pamboukdjian turned 96. It was a day of
bringing back memories of the day of Michael’s birth forty years ago
on a Saturday at 1:00 p.m. It was a day of remembering his
christening with over one hundred guests crowded inside and outside
of our small home. It was a day of recalling his uncle, Msgr. Ted
Ozog, giving him the rite of Baptism in our family room with people
inside the house and many gathered outdoors looking inside through
the many windows. Time does fly by but it is the good and happy
memories that we shall always remember. Sto Lat to Michael and
Artaki! May they both live to see many more birthdays.
The big event of
August that took place on Thursday, August 6 was the PRCUA Education
Fund, Inc “We Love Our Scholars” Luncheon. (A separate article is
found on the website.) Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! To all who
made it possible to raise over $16,000.00. Just a reminder that
donations can be made continuously to the PRCUA Education Fund
throughout the year. This is a wonderful way of honoring and
memorializing family and friends.
My husband and I
actually had two weekends in August (the only two all summer) when
we stayed home, cleaned house really good, cooked some of our
favorite meals and relaxed a little. It sure felt good!
We were then off to
Michigan for the Polish American Congress (PAC) Scholarship Luncheon
on Wednesday, August 19. My husband has been and still is a member
of this committee. This year the turnout for the lunch was
tremendous with seventy-one people in attendance. I am happy to say
that two PRCUA members, Natalia and Bartosz Maska (sister and
brother) received $750.00 each. Congratulations to Natalia and
Bartosz and the other recipients. May they have a prosperous and
fulfilling school year.
The PRCUA National
Softball Tournament, hosted by St. Rita’s Society #1368, took place
in Warren Michigan on Saturday, August 22. There were eight men’s
teams and two ladies’ teams. The day started out cold and gloomy,
however, as it progressed, the sun came out. The hospitality of St.
Rita’s Society was superb beginning on Friday evening with a
hospitality room filled with a variety of beverages and food,
especially, the delicious mostaccioli. It was a very relaxing time
whereby the players had the opportunity to relax and socialize with
one another before the big day.
On Saturday, the
luncheon was overwhelming with hot dogs, hamburgers and all the
trimmings, coleslaw, potato salad, macaroni salad, potato chips,
chocolate chips cookie, mini chocolate cupcakes and a nice selection
of beverages to choose from. The Dinner Dance was filled to
capacity. The tables even covered the dance floor. There must have
been between 175-200 participants and members. Once again the dinner
was more than expected-stuffed cabbage, boneless pork chops, sausage
and kraut, mini potato pancake, pierogi, mashed potatoes, string
beans, beets, applesauce, cucumbers in sour cream and cupcakes
topped with baseball rings. The Committee did an outstanding job
under the co-chairmanship of Jerry Lubiarz and Greg Losinski. Thank
you is extended to St. Rita Society and its many members who worked
together to make this a very successful tournament.
President Ozog and
Agnes Migiel Lubielski, PRCUA Employee who works in Membership
presented two seminars on the new PRCUA programs. One was given on
Saturday, August 22 in Warren Michigan and the other was given on
Sunday, August 23 in Wyandotte Michigan. Then President Ozog gave a
third one in Cleveland Ohio on Tuesday, August 25. President Ozog
also saw a PRCUA agent in Pennsylvania on August 26 and another
agent in Toledo Ohio on August 27.
The purpose of
these seminars was to keep our agents up to date on the financial
condition of PRCUA, to inform them of new programs and to answer
their questions. Although these are difficult economic times, life
insurance is still a necessity for young and old alike. One must be
prepared! If you put $1.00 away per day for this purpose, in one
year you can accumulate $365.00. Contact a PRCUA Insurance agent to
see how much insurance this amount will buy. In the long run, when
the time comes, it will be a little easier for the family to pay the
funeral costs.
My husband and I
traveled to Oakland Pennsylvania on Wednesday, August 26 to
participate in a Mass in honor of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the
patroness of Poland. National President of Polish Falcons, Tim Kuzma
and the Polish American Priests Association of Pennsylvania
organized this first time celebration. Over 700 people gathered
together at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The main celebrant was Bishop
David Zubik from the diocese of Pittsburgh with over 30 priests
concelebrating. PRCUA members, Rev. Tim Whalen from Orchard Lake
Michigan and Rev. Eric Orzech from Cleveland Ohio were part of this
group. It was a great honor to be part of this event that paid
homage to Our Lady of Czestochowa on her feast day and we thank the
organizers for inviting us.
On Saturday, August
29, we traveled back to Wyandotte Michigan, PRCUA National Chaplain,
Fr. Wally Ptak’s hometown. His parish, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, held
its 37th annual Polish festival with polka bands, Polish dancers,
Polish food, games and rides for the children. We had the
opportunity to see our own, PRCUA Echoes of Poland from Toledo Ohio
perform. Their dance numbers were lively, their costumes were
colorful and authentic and the audience greatly enjoyed them. They
did a superb job and a big “thank you” is extended to the
Choreographer, Paulina Ortyl for her dedication and commitment to
these dancers and for promoting Polish heritage through song and
dance.
August ended with
our presence on the beautiful grounds of Orchard Lake Seminary in
Michigan. The occasion was Orchard Lake Ladies Day that began with a
Mass in the Chapel followed by a Dinner with 280 guests in
attendance, eighty of whom were Seminarians and Priests from Poland.
Prior to dinner, everyone had the opportunity to bid on auction
items, to take chances on a raffle, to taste a variety of appetizers
and to socialize with one another. Mary Ellen Tyszka, very active in
Michigan Polonia was chosen as the 2009 Women of the Year. National
PRCUA Vice President Bob Bielenda and his wife Eleanor, as well as,
National PRCUA Director, Tom Lisiecki and National PRCUA Vice
Chaplain, Msgr Stanley Milewski were also present at this affair.
October will soon
be upon us. As you know, October is Polish American Heritage Month.
I am inviting all PRCUA members, young and the elderly, to celebrate
our heritage by writing in 50 words or less about your favorite
Polish Custom that you celebrate with your family. Information and
registration form is found on my website under Calendar of Events. I
hope that many of you will share your Polish Customs and participate
in this contest. Until next time!

July 4th was a great day for celebrating our country’s Birthday with
my husband’s family. Our nephew, Alan, and his wife invited the
entire Ozog family to their home in Jackson, Michigan, overlooking a
lake that was beautiful and very relaxing. Everyone ate well, played
games, went on a boat ride and caught up with news from each family.
We stayed in
Michigan for Polish American-Night that was held at Comerica Ball
Park in Detroit, MI on Wednesday, July 8. PRCUA Pope John Paul II
Society #1593 has hosted this event for many years. The evening was
great for a ball game that began with children representing the
three fraternals, Polish Roman Catholic Union of America, Polish
National Alliance and Polish Women’s Alliance, dressed in a variety
of Polish costumes performing their best on the field for a crowd of
29,000. The dance groups participating were: PRCUA Rogalin Dance
Troupe, PRCUA Halka Dancers, PRCUA Opole Dancers, PWA Lowicz
Dancers, PRCUA Polskie Maki Dancers, PNA Centennial Dancers, PRCUA
Syrena Dancers, PRCUA Zajaczek Dance Ensemble, PWA Zamek Dancers,
and PRCUA Wieliczka Dancers.
After the
children’s performances, National PRCUA Director, Barbara Raczynski
Toboy, introduced the dignitaries of Detroit’s Polonia: Sr. Rose
Marie Kujawa, President, Madonna University; Fr. Walter J. Ptak,
PRCUA National Chaplain; Wallace Ozog, PRCUA National President;
Paul Odrobina, PNA National Vice President; Teresa Abick, PNA
National Vice President; Tom Lisiecki PRCUA National Director; Ralph
Raczynski, Co-Chairman, Polish American Night and President of PRCUA
Society #1593; Stella Szczesny, President of Central Citizen's
Committee; Fr. Timothy Whalen, Chancellor of the Orchard Lake
Schools; and Mr. & Mrs. James Hicks supporters of the Orchard Lake
Schools. Then the Polish and American National anthems were sung by
Rob Szczublewski, followed by National PRCUA Director Thomas
Lisiecki throwing out the first ball. It was a glorious night and to
top it off the Detroit Tigers beat Kansas City Royals 3-1.
The game was
dedicated to our National President, Wallace Ozog, who was the
second Chairperson of this popular fraternal event. Since Mr. Ozog
became National PRCUA President, Ralph Raczynski and Barbara
Raczynski Toboy have taken over as co-chairpersons. The 40th
Anniversary of Polish-American night in Detroit Michigan will take
place in 2010. We thank the organizers, the dancers, the parents and
the Detroit Tigers for supporting this great fraternal event for so
many years.
PRCUA Fr. Al’s
Society #1493 hosted the National PRCUA Golf Tournament in Wayne
Michigan July 17-19. It was golfers weather-not too hot and not too
cold. Mrs. Eleanor Bielenda, wife of National PRCUA VP, Bob Bielenda
and I encouraged the golfers to support the Nationwide PRCUA
Education Fund Raffle. We thank all who supported this raffle by
purchasing tickets and we thank Fr. Al’s Society for allowing us to
sell the tickets.
The Polish
Community of Park Ridge Illinois organized the first annual Art
Festival on July 25 and 26. The main goal of the festival was an
exposition of Polish Art and Culture. The festival offered
performances by Polish bands, numerous contests, theatrical
performances and meetings with some of the most well known Polish
artists, media representatives, businessmen, politicians and
socialites. Traditional Polish drinks and cuisine were also
available for purchase. President Ozog was invited to participate in
opening ceremonies.
Just like any other
month, July was busy. Summer is flying by very quickly and soon the
children will be back at school. Enjoy what’s left of it with your
family. Until next time!
A Successful Fundraiser Due to Donors

PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. fundraiser, donations were made in the
amount of $6,740.00. Donors came from Illinois, Maine, Michigan,
Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Ohio, New Jersey and Florida.

was given from an Anonymous Donor.
There is also a
Permanent Fund for those who wish to donate $25,000.00 or more
in capital deposits within a twelve-month period. The income
generated from this donation will be used to award scholarships to
students each year.
A third fund,
called the PRCUA Education Fund, which is funded by
fundraisers and contributions made by many individuals and
organizations through out the year, gives scholarships as funds are
available.
This is a beautiful
way of honoring or memorializing a loved one or a special friend or

(Photos) Love was truly in
the air at the “We Love Our Scholars” Luncheon held August 6 at the
PRCUA home office in Chicago Illinois. The luncheon, donations,
Nationwide Raffle and Romantic Raffle made a net profit of
$16,189.72 for the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. There were almost 100
guests in attendance dressed in different shades of red and some
decorated with cut out hearts. In these difficult economic times,
Committee members were hoping for 80 people, set up for 90 and also
found seating for six more unexpected guests the day of the
luncheon. Thankfully, we had good Committee members who gave up
their seats.
Doors opened at
11:00 a.m. at which time PRCUA employees and volunteers, Kevin Ryba
and Bill Seranko walked around serving wine. As guests checked in,
they were directed to the Door Prize table where they had the
opportunity to win one of 43 prizes by selecting a lucky change
purse that had a card with hearts in it. At the table, each person
received a table favor that consisted of a cup decorated with hearts
and romantic sayings, cheese crackers, hot chocolate and a small
bottle of Swedish Vodka donated by Michael Garofola from California.
Prior and during lunch, Guest Guitarist, Frank Nava entertained us
with some romantic music.
At 12:00 noon,
Joseph Boruta, Former PRCUA National Treasurer and Former Director
of District 7 introduced Mistress of Ceremonies, Anna Muszalski
Toltzman, a long time PRCUA member and presently, a member of the
PRCUA Task Force. She welcomed everyone and then called on Mr.
Boruta to say the Invocation.
Anna directed each
table to the Buffet that was catered by Kasia’s Deli. The menu
consisted of stuffed chicken breast, beef roulades, broasted
potatoes, string beans with onions and mushrooms, cucumbers in sour
cream, garden salad and fruit salad all topped off with a refreshing
cup of ice cream with a kolaczki donated by Racine bakery.
During dessert,
Marlena Dzis, a former scholarship recipient entertained with a
beautiful and delightful presentation of “The Doll Song” from
Jacques Offenbach’s “Tales of Hoffman” and “Frottola Italiana” from
“Zygmunt August” by Tadeusz Joteyko accompanied by her good friend,
Jennifer Kelly. It was a great honor to have one of our own PRCUA
members entertain us.
The Program than
continued with National PRCUA President, Wallace Ozog thanking
everyone for their presence and emphasizing the importance of
helping our young adults with their education.
The purpose of the
luncheon was to raise funds for the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. It
also gave us the opportunity to highlight and meet four-scholarship
recipients-Marlena Dzis, Avalon Williams, Daniel Williams and Anna
Muszalski Toltzman. They each briefly spoke on “The importance of
the PRCUA scholarship and how it helped in funding their education”.
Their words were very inspirational and spoken with great
appreciation.
Then Lucia Seranko,
Co-Chairperson of the luncheon announced the winners who best
exemplified the theme of the luncheon, “LOVE”. She stated that love
could be described in many ways. She described love as pure; best
reflected by a lady all in white, Mary Jane Draus. Love is generous;
best reflected by Felicia Krupinski dressed in hearts and $2.00
bills that she donated to the Education Fund. Love is bright and
cheerful; best reflected in our youth, Avalon Williams.
The Program
continued with Mrs. Seranko thanking the gentlemen for their
attendance. The Committee felt that few men attend such luncheons so
in appreciation a “special thank you” prize was given to 10 men
whose names were picked from a bowl. (Twenty men were present.)
Since this was a
luncheon for education, Lidia Kowalewicz, Managing Editor of the
Narod Polski, gave a quiz on Polish history to the attendees. The
person at each table who got the most correct answers received the
centerpiece that was a musical, cuddly bear. All others received a
consolation prize of a small bottle of Sobieski vodka, compliments
of T. Ron Jasinski Herbert.
Mr. Boruta
concluded the Program with remarks comparing the cost of higher
education in the past with the present cost that has increased
drastically. PRCUA is trying to assist our scholars who must pay the
high costs by having fundraisers such as this luncheon or by
appealing for individual donations.
Mr. Kenneth P.
Gill, PRCUA Deputy and Scholarship Reviewer then conducted the
Nationwide Raffle and Mr. Bill Seranko, PRCUA Supervisor, District 1
and PRCUA AML Compliance Officer conducted the Romantic Raffle.
It takes a lot of
people to make an event successful. It takes a Committee. Our
Committee members were:Lucia Seranko, Dorothy Bialek, Eleanor
Bielenda, Joseph Boruta, Diane Cortesi, Michaeline Drust, Kenneth P.
Gill, Marlene Gill, Elizabeth Grabowski, Lidia Kowalewicz, Felicia
Krupinski, Conrad Miczko, Lorene Pontarelli, Alice Robaczewski,
Kathryn Rosypal and Joann Ozog. We thank them for their time and
enthusiasm that they put into this fundraiser for the sake of our
youth.
It takes
volunteers. The volunteers were: Halina Bieniewska, Kasia Derus,
Stasia Gasior, Bernadette Grabowski, Natalie Grabowski, Sonia
Grabowski, Natalia Kowalewicz, Paul Odrobina, Jr., Agnieszka Migiel,
Anna Wolan, Kasia Wolan, Frank Nava, Kevin Ryba and Bill Seranko.
Many of these volunteers were our youth. It is important to get our
youth involved in fraternal activities such as this one because they
are our future leaders who will eventually take over leadership in
organizations in Polonia.
It takes
participants. Present at this event were: (PRCUA); National
President, Wallace Ozog, National Director, Dist. 8, Krystyna Lech,
(PNA); National Vice-Presidents, Teresa Abick and Paul Odrobina, (PWA);
National President, Virginia Sikora and her officers, Antoinette
Vandernoot and Sharon Zago, Polish Women’s Civic Club, PRCUA
Seniors, PRCUA members and employees, PMA employees and our many
friends. We thank everyone for seeing the importance of this
fundraiser and for supporting it.
This is not the end
of our fundraising efforts for the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc.
Raising money for the education of our youth is on going. Donations
can be made in the form of cash, checks, real estate property,
stocks and securities, gifts of future interest, insurance, wills
and trusts. For further information, please contact Wallace Ozog,
PRCUA National President at 1-800-772-8632.

(Photos) Where did May go?
It came! It was busy! It was gone! June began with the monthly
meeting of the PRCUA Seniors’ meeting. At this meeting, the seniors
were treated with a Mothers’ Day/Fathers’ Day Luncheon and the men
each received a small gift. Our #1 Volunteer, Felicia Krupinski,
decided to join this friendly group. We can always use more members
to socialize with, play Bingo and have fun. Meetings are held the
first Tuesday of each month. Hope to see more new members at future
meetings.
On Thursday, June 4 the Polish American Congress, Michigan Division,
Polish Day Parade Committee roasted National PRCUA President,
Wallace Ozog. The program began with MC, PRCUA member, Julius
Szymczyk calling on PRCUA National Vice-Chaplain, Monsignor Stanley
Milewski to say the invocation that also included some of
Monsignor’s roasting remarks.
Other roasters included Sr. Ann Ozog (sister), Christopher Ozog
(son), David Klein (nephew and godson), Robert Bielenda (National
PRCUA Vice-President), Ron Martin (cousin-in-law) and Calvert Bailey
(former boss with the State Of Michigan).
Also, present at this event with almost two hundred people were
National PRCUA Directors, Joan Sylak, Barbara Toboy and Tom Lisiecki,
representatives from many PRCUA societies, PRCUA Dance Directors,
many friends from Polish National Alliance, family members and
supporters of the Polish Day Parade.
The purpose of the roast was to honor President Ozog who will be the
Grand Marshal of the Hamtramck Labor Day Parade and it was also a
fundraiser for the parade.
My husband and I would like to thank all of those who supported him
and also this fundraiser with their presence, with their ad, with
their congratulations or with their gifts. It is good to see the
support and working together among so many.
Since we were in Michigan, my husband and I attended PRCUA Pope John
Paul II Society # 1593 annual Youth Bowling on Saturday, June 6.
Before my husband became National President, we were in charge of
this event and presently, our son, Christopher is Chairman. The
children bowled, had pizza and pop and received a variety of door
prizes for which they were very excited. A special thank you is
extended to Pope John Paul II Society for carrying on this event for
twenty years, to PRCUA Halka Dancers for having this yearly outing
for their students, to the Raczynski/Toboy family for bringing their
children and to Chris Ozog for continuing this PRCUA program for our
youth.
On Sunday, June 7 we were back in Illinois for the PRCUA Maria
Konopnicka Adult Culture Group annual picnic. The day started out
rainy but eventually the sun appeared. This year it was nice to see
the younger members working. Thank you is extended to the organizers
of this fundraiser who have worked very hard for many years to
promote this fun-filled event.
The PRCUA Board of Directors held their quarterly meeting on June 12
and 13 followed by the Sacred Heart Mass on Sunday, June 14. There
were many children dressed in Polish costumes in attendance for the
mass. Children should be part of all events of an organization
because this is one way that they grow up with the organization and
become part of it. Congratulations are extended to District 8
Directors, Krystyna Lech and James Rustik for a job well done.
On Friday, June 19 the PNA Centennial Dancers decided to visit the
Polish Museum on the way to the Polish Fest held in Milwaukee
Wisconsin. Unfortunately, we were not there to greet them because we
were in Michigan for Orchard Lake Founders Day. However, PMA
Director, Jan Lorys and PMA staff gave them a tour of the museum and
gift shop, fed them with delicious Polish food catered by Kasia’s
Deli and sent them on their way to Wisconsin with a goody bag filled
with items from PRCUA and the Museum. We are always happy to have
visitors from other states and we hope that the students and parents
enjoyed themselves.
Orchard Lake Founders’ Day, one of the major fundraisers, was
attended by almost 800 men and women. Although the day started out
very gloomy, the golfers were able to get their exercise on the golf
course. Those who stayed on campus had the opportunity to attend
Mass, visit various areas of the campus, go on a boat ride,
socialize with one another and consume a variety of food. It was a
day of seeing friends from other states and also a day of supporting
a great institution.
Father’s day was celebrated on Saturday, June 20 with our son,
Michael and his family. His wife prepared a delicious meal fit for a
father. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable day with our children
and grandchildren.
On Friday, June 26, the Polish Museum of America held its annual
Summer Ball. There were approximately 134 people in attendance who
came out to honor National PNA Vice-President, Teresa Abick with the
Polish Spirit Award for her contributions to Polonia, especially
with the youth. Congratulations are extended to Teresa for receiving
this prestigious award!
On Saturday, July 27, my husband and I awoke early to attend Youth
Bowling in the Chicago area. There were about 70 children in
attendance who got strikes, spares and gutter balls. No matter what
they got, they enjoyed the morning getting exercise and being with
their friends. After bowling, the children received pop and pizza
and all bowlers received small trophies and high games and high
series received special awards. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable
morning watching our youth, the future of Polonia. Thank you is
extended to PRCUA for providing this program for our younger
members, to the parents for bringing their children and to the
children for participating.
In the evening, my husband and I attended the opening reception of
the PMA Polish Folk Costumes Exhibit “Forgotten Beauty” curated by
Paulina Jakubiec. The almost 200 people in attendance saw costumes
from a variety of regions and beautiful pictures on loan from the
Polish Women’s Alliance depicting regional costumes. The evening
consisted of entertainment by Siumni, a group of folk dancers and
musicians from the Polish Highlanders Association of Chicago, along
with exquisite Polish cuisine, spirits and wines. Thank you is
extended to Paulina Jakubiec for her time and interest in putting
this exhibit together. This exhibit will continue until August 15.
The activities for the month of June ended on Sunday, June 28 with
the installation of officers of the Polish Women’s Civic Club (PWCC).
The Luncheon celebrating the 85th Anniversary of the organization
was held at the beautiful and elegant Venuti’s Banquet hall in
Addison Illinois. For this special anniversary, PWCC honored its
Senior Members, some of whom are PRCUA members. Those Senior Members
present were: Lucille Kurelo, Lorie Gorny, Jayne Szeklucki-Schorr,
Elaine Pranica, Wanda Kalin, Dorothy Banas, Wanda Slotkowski,
Dorothy Wojer, Casmera Olech, Florence Szafraniec, Rose Zubko,
Eleanore Zarnowiecki, Lois Petka, Jeanine Okonek, Genevieve Srutwa
and Lorene Stach.
It was a beautiful day for a delicious luncheon that was held in
elegant surroundings. Entertainment was provided by the fabulous and
energetic PRCUA Wesoly Lud Folk Ensemble. Congratulations are
extended to those, as President Ann Burzycki stated, “who have
worked towards the PWCC mission that helps to fund the cost of
higher education for college students of Polish heritage, while also
enhancing the lives of its members and Polish society.”
The PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. Luncheon on August 6 will soon be

The first weekend of May was very busy with the celebration of the
218th Anniversary of Polish Constitution Day. On Friday, May
1,Illinois Governor, Patrick Quinn invited about 100 individuals
from various organizations and businesses to commemorate this day.
In the evening, the Polish American Police Association of Chicago
and Illinois hosted the 45th Awards Banquet and celebration of
Polish Constitution Day at Przybylos with over 300 guests.
Congratulations are extended to Edward Mika, Past President of the
Alliance of Polish Clubs who was honored at this banquet for his
work in Polonia.
Saturday, May 2 was
a beautiful day for a parade. Prior to the parade there was a flag
raising ceremony, Polish and American, at Daley’s Plaza in downtown
Chicago. This was the first time that such a ceremony took place and
it was appropriate to begin this day in such a way.
Almost 200 people
gathered early Saturday morning at the Congress Plaza Hotel in
downtown Chicago for a pre parade brunch sponsored by Chicago
Society PNA. Everyone was dressed in either red and white or Polish
Folk Costumes. There were a lot of beautiful queens, their court and
their escorts. Everyone was in a happy mood and ready for a parade
sponsored by the Alliance of Polish Clubs. PRCUA was out strong with
students from various Polish Dance and Language Schools. The Polish
Museum of America displayed the winners of the Polish Constitution
Art Contest “Poland’s Triumph” on their float and many PRCUA
employees and members enjoyed riding on the float.
After the parade,
the big celebration continued at Navy Pier with the “Celebrate
Poland” festival that was sponsored by the Polish Consulate in
Chicago. The festival was jammed packed with young and old alike.
There were many vendors advertising and displaying their goods, food
by Kasia’s Deli and great entertainment by local dance groups, such
as our own PRCUA Wesoly Lud and PRCUA Polonia, as well as,
entertainers from Poland. PMA employees, Krystyna Grell, Monika
Nowak and Pauline Jakubiec manned a booth with literature on the
museum.
Sunday morning
began with a Mass at Holy Trinity Mission with His Excellency,
Bishop Thomas Paprocki as the main celebrant. The church was filled
to capacity with families and representatives of various
organizations. It was a beautiful way of ending a weekend of
celebrations honoring the 218th Anniversary of Polish Constitution
Day and it was a great weekend in which children and adults came
together to show their pride in their Polish Heritage.
On Tuesday, May 5
the PRCUA Seniors held their monthly meeting. Each lady received a
beautiful pink carnation corsage in honor of Mother’s Day. The
Seniors were surprised with two new members, Jozef and Witold. We
welcome them and hope that more PRCUA members will come to the
meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. It is a way of getting
out of the house, having fun, forgetting your aches and pains and
socializing with one another. For further information, call Mary
Jane at 1-773-782-2601.
For Mother’s Day we
traveled to Michigan to be with my mother. On Saturday, I did
prepare the Mother’s Day dinner that was enjoyed, not only, by my
mother, but also by my son, Michael and his family. The
grandchildren showed me how to play the game of Yahtez and I guess
because it was Mother’s Day, Grandma won 3 games.
On Sunday, my
husband and I were with our youngest son, Christopher at Mass and at
the annual Mother’s Day Breakfast sponsored by PRCUA Society #162
(Wyandotte Michigan). This is a time that we get to see many PRCUA
members. The Wyandotte men do a fantastic breakfast and each year
the crowd gets larger. Thank you is extended to those PRCUA members
who honor all mothers with such a delicious meal. I hope that all
mothers had a beautiful day with their children and grandchildren. I
know that I had a wonderful and relaxing weekend with my family.
On Monday, May 11
the Polish Women’s Civic Club (PWCC) held their monthly meeting in
the PRCUA Social Hall. There was a nice crowd of 70 members and
guests in attendance. They had a brief meeting, a delicious lunch
catered by Kasia’s Deli and the opportunity to visit the museum. It
was amazing to hear from many that it was several years since they
visited the museum or it was the first time that they were at the
museum. We thank President Ann Burzycki for bringing members of the
PWCC to the museum and hopefully, they will visit more often and
will encourage their families and friends to also visit our
“Treasure of Polonia.”
On Sunday May 17,
my husband and I attended the blessing and dedication of the Katyn’s
monument at St. Adalberts Cemetery in Niles Illinois. It was in
Katyn (part of the former Soviet Union) that in 1940, 22,000
intellectuals, military officers, teachers, priests and officials
who represented the Polish elite were buried in a mass grave after
being shot in the head. They were taken prisoners when the Soviet
Union invaded Poland in September 1939 during WWII in support of the
Nazis. Over 3,000 people attended the Mass at the cemetery
celebrated by Cardinal Jozef Glemp, retired Archbishop of Warsaw
Poland from 1981 through 2006. This event ended with a banquet at
Przybylos attended by almost 500 people.
On Thursday, May 21
the PRCUA Illinois/Indiana Women’s Division held its quarterly
meeting with about twenty-five ladies in attendance. A brief meeting
was held and crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary took place. This
year each member present placed a carnation in a vase and then Joyce
Szarowicz, PRCUA National Secretary-Treasurer, put a beautiful crown
of fresh flowers on Mary’s head. This was a very moving ceremony
with each member taking part. Afterwards, a delicious mostaccioli
dinner, salad and ice cream prepared by the hostess of the meeting,
PRCUA National Director, Lillian Stempinski, was enjoyed by all.
Remember, all PRCUA ladies who are delegates of their societies are
invited to these meetings that give you the opportunity to meet and
socialize with other PRCUA members. Hope to see you at the next
meeting in September!
On Wednesday, May
27 my husband and I attended the 48th annual Chicago Police
Recognition Awards Luncheon. This year’s luncheon that recognizes
officers for their valor and bravery had over 1500 guests present.
PRCUA appreciates those men and women, some of whom are PRCUA
members for the dedication they give to the community and the
courageousness and bravery they show to protect the lives of many.
After the luncheon,
we headed for Michigan for the joint meeting of the National
Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) and Michigan
Fraternal Insurance Counselors (MFIC). It was a two day meeting
whereby insurance agents had the opportunity to receive continuing
education, receive information on various insurance topics and speak
with vendors on insurance products and services. Insurance agents
representing PRCUA were Ted Klamerus, Michael Ozog, Teresa Gibala,
Julius Szymczyk, Bob Bielenda, Agnes Migiel and President Ozog.
We left the NAIFA
meeting in Michigan Friday afternoon to attend an evening reception
at Millennium Park in Chicago Illinois with former President of
Poland and Noble Peace Prize Recipient, Lech Walesa. Mr. Walesa was
in town for the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Fall of
Communism. He mingled with the crowd for awhile, took photos and
then attended a multimedia concert “Freedom 89-Born in Poland.”
President Ozog welcomed Mr. Walesa and spoke a few words with him
regarding his visit to the Polish Museum of America a few years
back.
On Saturday, May 30
my husband and I attended a 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. Hyacinth Basilica
with Polish Primate Jozef Cardinal Glemp being the main celebrant.
Attendance included leaders from Polonia and students from the
Cardinal Wyczynski Polish School that was celebrating its 25th
Anniversary. The children were involved with the Mass as singers,
lectors and gift presenters. The Paderewski Symphony Orchestra of
young students also played some beautiful songs on the violin.
Cardinal Glemp presented twenty seven individuals with medals for
assisting the efforts of the Catholic faith in the Polish community.
Congratulations are extended to PRCUA member, Celina Roznowska as
being one of the recipients. After Mass, everyone was invited to the
school hall for a play that the students from the Polish school put
on. It was very enjoyable and the children did a very good job.
Congratulations are extended to them and their teachers.
May 30 was also a
day that was anxiously awaited for by PRCUA employee, Robert
Kowalski. This was the day that Bob decided to tie the knot with his
true love, Margaret. The ceremony was held at the beautiful St.
Hyacinth Basilica. Happiness radiated from Margaret’s face and
nervousness was shown on Bob’s face. However, both of their voices
were very clear and strong when they pronounced their vows.
Congratulations are extended to Bob and Margaret and may they shower
each other with much love and happiness.
On the last day of
May, my husband and I were invited to view the culmination of many
hours of practices during the past year. We attended a dinner show
by the Kalejdoskop Polish Dancers choreographered by PRCUA member,
Barbara Eckert and a concert by the Polonia Dance Ensemble whose
Director is Anna Krysinski and choreographer is Pani Celina
Roznowska, both PRCUA members. From the youngest to the oldest, the
students did a fantastic job. I applaud the children, teachers and
parents for their dedication to their Polish heritage and may the
children continue to bring joy to those who watch them.
Plans are underway
for the “We Love Our Scholars” Luncheon on Thursday, August 6. Ask
your family and friends to join us for a fun afternoon. For
registration form, go to www.prcua.org, click on, News and Events

Events. Hope to see many of our PRCUA members at this PRCUA
Education Fund fundraiser. Until next time!

April began with the sixth birthday of my granddaughter, Grace
Victoria Ozog. One does not realize how fast time flies until you
see your grandchildren grow from a cuddly, little infant to a bubbly
child filled with enthusiasm, energy, love, joy and happiness that
brings life to many.
On Friday, April 3
the Polish Constitution Day Committee held its fundraiser at Jolly
Inn to raise money for its Parade and also to select its queen and
her court. PRCUA members, Justyna Wojnowska and Angella Wojnowski
were contestants. I congratulate both of these young ladies for
being part of this contest. Congratulations are also extended to
Angella for being selected as Miss Congeniality.
The built up energy
that children have was brought forth at Holy Trinity Polish Mission
on Saturday, April 4. Halina Misterka, PRCUA member and PMA
Archivist, invited me for a Polish Palm Weaving Workshop that she
was doing with her students from the Polish Song and Dance Ensemble,
Lajkonik.
When I first came
to Chicago, I introduced an annual Palm Weaving Workshop using
tropical palms. Little did I realize that there was a Polish Palm
that consists of pussy willows, wrapped with greenery throughout its
length and adorned with wildflowers, ribbons and colored tissues.
People in Poland did not have access to tropical palms and
therefore, used whatever they had on hand.
I enjoyed my
afternoon with the Lajkonik students who showed me how to create a
Polish Palm. While assembling their palms, one could see the
enthusiasm and pride in the children’s faces. I thank Halina
Misterka for inviting me and I greatly appreciated
the hospitality and friendliness from the Director and teachers. May
those involved with the Lajkonik Polish Song and Dance Ensemble
continue to promote such workshops for the youth of Polonia.
The next day,
Sunday, April 5 the energy and enthusiasm of children was also
present at the Polish Women’s Civic Club Palm Sunday Luncheon.
Parents and grandparents brought their children and grandchildren,
dressed in their Easter finery, to meet and take photos with the
Easter bunny who was non other than PRCUA member, Krystyna Kowalik.
With huge smiles on their faces, each child received an Easter
basket filled with an array of items from candy to toys.
It was nice to see
young and old at this affair. The committee worked hard to bring in
the large number of guests (the most in a number of years), to offer
over forty beautiful raffle baskets and to bring joy to the children
present.
The National PRCUA
Bowling Tournament was held in Toledo Ohio April 17-19. At this
tournament either the bowlers were exceptionally good or the lanes
were because there were three bowlers who bowled a 300 game. On the
whole, the scores were also quite high.
The committee did a
superb job with good food, good music and good hospitality.
PRCUA is fortunate to have such dedicated and hard workers who take
the time to put these tournaments together. We are also thankful to
have members who are interested in participating in the programs
that PRCUA offers them.
On Thursday, April
23 Mayor Richard Daley hosted a reception for Polish Constitution
Day. This reception was the first of many events that kicked off in
the Polish American community the celebration of the 218th
anniversary of the historic Polish Constitution Day of May 3, 1791.
Dignitaries gave speeches, the Queen of the parade and her court
were introduced and Certificates of Appreciation for their work in
Polonia were presented to George Migala, Edward Mika, Lester
Surowiec and Channel 7 News Reporter, Alan Krashesky.
On Saturday, April
25, PRCUA and the Polish Genealogy Society hosted a beginning Polish
Genealogy Workshop titled “Path to the Past/Discovering Grandma’s
Secrets”. There were thirty-four interested individuals from Texas,
New Jersey, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. Seminar participants
had the opportunity to receive general information through lectures,
hand on library experience and talking with one another. A delicious
Polish lunch was catered by Kasia’s Deli. There were many positive
comments about the workshop and lunch and everyone enjoyed
themselves very much.
Thank you is
extended to our presenters, Rosalie Lindberg, Virginia Witucke and
Michael Mulholland for sharing their knowledge with others, to
Felicia Krupinski, Kasia Derus and Lucia and Bill Seranko for
volunteering their time and assisting in various capacities and to
the participants, especially to our PRCUA members.
This was the second
event that PRCUA organized for the benefit of the PRCUA Education
Fund. The next fundraiser, “We Love Our Scholars” luncheon will be
held Thursday, August 6. It will be an afternoon of hearts, the
color red and lots of fun. Please mark your calendar.
On April 25, we
also had a visit from a group of PRCUA members and friends from
Toledo Ohio. The trip, organized by PRCUA and PMA member, Rev.
Richard Philiposki, S. Ch. consisted of visits to two churches, the
PRCUA office and the museum, lunch at a Polish Restaurant and
shopping in the Polish district. Margaret Kot, head librarian,
showed her Power Point Presentation on the Library, Archives and
Museum. The group then viewed the exhibits in the Great Hall,
shopped in the Gift Shop and toured the Library.
It is always a
pleasure to have our PRCUA members and friends visit the home office
and museum. If interested, please contact President Ozog at
1-800-773-8632. Special thanks are extended to Fr. Philiposki for
organizing the trip.
Our April
activities ended on Sunday, April 26 with the PRCUA Illinois/Indiana
Women’s Division Swieconka. District 7, under the Chairmanship of
National Director Lillian Stempinski hosted this annual event. The
PRCUA Polonia Dance Ensemble did a superb performance of a selection
of lively dances that everyone enjoyed. Several guests were lucky
raffle winners and everyone went home with a beautiful pansy plant.
Thank you is extended to Mrs. Stempinski and her committee for their
dedication of continuing this Polish tradition and to the Polonia
Dancers for taking time from their busy schedule to entertain us.
April showers bring
greener grass and beautiful flowers. May you enjoy the new life that
is popping up all over. Until next time!

March was a teaser bringing in weather with temperatures near 70
degrees and then surprising everyone with snow up to six inches. For
my husband and I, March began with a flurry of activities relating
to General Casimir Pulaski.
Chicago celebrates Pulaski’s birthday on the first Monday in March.
The weekend was filled with events that were sponsored by the Polish
Highlanders, the Pulaski Citizens Club, the Polish Consulate, the
Polish Museum of America and the Polish American Congress. Each
event was attended by young and old alike, had dignitaries speaking
on this great hero of two continents and was attended by those who
believe that General Pulaski should be given this special
recognition for his bravery and accomplishments.
On Saturday March 7, Michigan’s State Ball was held in honor of
twenty-one students who have attended Polish Dance Schools and are
graduating after many years of practices, performances and recitals.
Each student was presented to the audience with a brief resume about
themselves followed by a performance of a selection of dances
choreographed by the founder of the State Ball, Shirley Galanty and
Choreographer of Polskie Maki Dance School, Kelly Malenowski. The
honorees received a medallion and a plaque of recognition from PRCUA
for their dedication of promoting their Polish heritage through song
and dance.
Not only do these young adults receive an education in Polish song
and dance, but they also learn to give to various charitable causes.
Through many fundraisers that they were involved with, the students
were able to present monetary donations to Orchard Lake Schools,
Polish American Welfare Association and the Polish Museum of
America. I was happy to accept $500.00 from the students and $200.00
from the Michigan Women’s Division towards the PMA’s Sabina Logisz
Matching Fund.
I congratulate these special young adults for their many years of
interest and hard work. May they continue to promote their heritage
as they begin a new phase of their life of adulthood. May they take
interest in and eventually become leaders in various Polish
organizations, especially the Polish Roman Catholic Union of
America. And may they always be proud of their heritage.
I thank the parents for encouraging their children and for
chauffeuring them to many practices and performances. Finally, I
thank the Directors and Choreographers for giving their time to our
youth, our future.
On Thursday March 19, the PRCUA employees celebrated St. Joseph’s
Day with a delicious meatless meal catered by Kasia’s Deli. Thank
you is extended to Fr. Stanislaw Jankowski, Pastor of St. Hedwig’s
Parish who took time from his busy schedule to bless the food and to
socialize with the employees.
On Saturday March 21 the National PRCUA Basketball tournament took
place in Whiting Indiana. It was one of the better tournaments with
12 men’s teams and 3 women’s teams. An added attraction this year
was the introduction of 6 boys and 3 girls 3 on 3 teams (ages
12-15). I congratulate Rich Sobilo and his committee for a very well
organized tournament and also for bringing our younger members into
this tournament. The future of PRCUA lies in our youth and they must
be introduced to the organization from an early age.
I also would like to thank National PRCUA Director from District 9,
Elizabeth Grabowski and PRCUA Director from Polonia Dance Ensemble,
Anna Kryzinski for encouraging and bringing in the younger players
for this national tournament. If all Polish language and dance
schools followed in their footsteps, PRCUA would once again sponsor
tournaments with twenty or thirty teams just like in the old days.
On Thursday March 26, the Polish Museum of America in conjunction
with the 2009 Southern Graphics Council Conference presented an
exhibition which displayed the evolution of Polish printmaking over
five decades. The exhibit, titled “Pressing Matter: A Glimpse at the
Polish Print Continuum” was co-curated by Monika Nowak, PMA’S
Graphic Art Collection Curator and Beauvais Lyons, Professor of Art
at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The Great Hall was filled with over 200 people in attendance.
International acclaimed Jazz singer, Grazyna Auguscik did a
fantastic performance that was enjoyed by all. Artists and
conference panelists, Stanislaw Wejman and Malgorzata Malwina
Niespodziewana from Poland were special guests. A variety of food
and vodka from the Polish Highland area were available to the
guests. Ms. Nowak did a superb job in organizing this exhibit which
attracted a large number of younger people. The Polish Museum of
America is most fortunate to have this talented and dedicated staff
member who truly gives of herself.
On Saturday March 28, PRCUA had its Easter Polish Cultural Day. It
was an event in which participants had the opportunity to learn palm
weaving, pisanki and egg painting. They also heard a presentation on
Easter food, as well as, sampling some of the food that is blessed
on Holy Saturday. President Wallace Ozog introduced the swiecone
that he experienced while growing up. Blessed kielbasa, ham and eggs
are cut up in small pieces and then mixed with vinegar and white
horseradish. His bowl of swiecone disappeared quickly and was
enjoyed by all who never tasted it before. Each participant also had
the opportunity to pick an egg to win a variety of door prizes.
Everyone enjoyed themselves and at the same time learned about
Polish Easter customs. A special thanks is extended to Maria
Grzadziel, Jola Zachara, Stasia Gasior, Barbara Kozuchowska, Halina
Biniewska, Margaret Kot, Felicia Krupinski, Lucia Seranko, Mary Jane
Robles and Pam and Fred Tuytens who gave of their time to make this
new Easter program possible for PRCUA. All proceeds go towards the
PRCUA Education fund that will assist our youth with their higher
education.
The next Workshop that will be sponsored by Polish Roman Catholic
Union of America and the Polish Genealogy Society is the Polish
Geneology Workshop to be held on Saturday, April 25 from 9:30 a.m.
to 3:00 p.m. If you are interested in Genealogy, please sign up for
this seminar on the fundamentals of Polish Family History research
for those who have considered the challenge but don’t know where to
begin. For the registration form,
hope that I will see some PRCUA members at this workshop. This is an
opportunity to learn something about genealogy and also to take
advantage of one of the programs offered to our PRCUA families.
The tulip leaves in my garden have popped up. Hopefully, the weather
will get warmer so that the beautiful and colorful flowers will
blossom and decorate my front yard. Wishing all a blessed and happy
Easter! Until next time!

PULASKI CELEBRATION 2009
(Photos) In some parts of the United
States Casimir Pulaski Day is celebrated in October on the death of this
great American hero and in other parts of the U.S. this celebration takes
place in March which is the month of Pulaski’s birth. In Chicago Pulaski Day
is a legal holiday and it is celebrated on the first Monday in March.
Pulaski Day Celebration
began at the Polish Highlanders on Saturday, February 28 at 10:00 a.m. Many
of its members, dressed in their Polish folk costumes, were in attendance,
as well as, dignitaries from various Polish organizations. Hon. Zygmunt
Matynia, Consul General of the Republic of Poland and Hon. Pawel
Pietrasienski, Vice-Consul General of the Republic of Poland were also
present with special guests from Poland, General Mierczyk, Colonel
Kopczynski and Andrzej Najgebauer from the Military University of Technology
in Warsaw.
The program consisted of
brief comments on General Pulaski by dignitaries and by students from the
Polish Language School from St. Camillus parish and from PRCUA Maria
Konopnicka Polish Language School. Students from the Polish Highlanders
School provided lively entertainment of music and dance. After the program
everyone proceeded outdoors for the wreath laying ceremony. It was a very
cold day and the event concluded with a warm and delicious luncheon. At the
luncheon Gen. Miercyzk presented plaques with the logo of the Military
University of Technology to several of the dignitaries. PRCUA National
President, Wallace Ozog was one of the recipient’s.
The Pulaski Polish Citizen
Group of Hammond Indiana held its celebration Saturday evening at St.
Casimir parish. The evening began with a Mass celebrated by Rev. Waclaw
Lech, Pastor of St. Camillus parish. The church was filled with members from
Knights of Columbus, Veterans, Boy Scouts, children from PRCUA St. Rafal
Kalinowski Polish School and many individuals from little children to the
elderly. It was nice to see a mixture of young and old honoring the great
hero, Casimir Pulaski.
After Mass, all proceeded
to the Social Hall for a program that consisted of brief speeches by
dignitaries and entertainment by the PRCUA Wesoly Lud Folk Ensemble and
PRCUA St. Rafal Kalinowski Dancers. The students did a superb job with
smiles on their faces and enthusiasm in their dance steps. Everyone was then
invited to the lunch room for light refreshments of pastries, petite
sandwiches and coffee. This was a great opportunity to relax, to socialize
and to end a very enjoyable evening of praying together, of learning
something about the hero who fought for two countries and of being
entertained by some dedicated dancers. A special thanks is extended to the
committee for a job well done.
On Sunday, March 1 the
Polish Consulate sponsored “Celebrate Poland” at Navy Pier in honor of
General Pulaski. This event consisted of informational booths, entertainment
and good Polish food by Kasia’s deli. The Polish Museum of America had a
booth that distributed free information on the museum, as well as, activity
books for children and also sold a variety of items from the PMA’S Gift
Shop. Slawomir Stanislaw Skrzypek, President of the National Bank of Poland
was present at this event. He gave dignitaries who were present a beautiful
set of gold coins commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Polish
settlement in Jamestown Virginia. This year the crowd was much larger than
last year. Although it was cold and snowy outdoors, inside the atmosphere
was warm and friendly.
On Monday, March 2 the
Polish Museum of America (PMA) held its annual Pulaski Day Celebration. The
Great Hall of the Museum was filled to capacity. Chairman of the Board of
the PMA and National President of Polish Roman Catholic Union of America,
Wallace Ozog was Master of Ceremonies. Hon. Pat Quinn, Governor of the State
of Illinois, Hon. Maria Pappas, Cook County Treasurer, Hon. Aurelia Pucinski,
Judge, Circuit Court of Cook County, Hon. Zygmunt Matynia, Consul General of
the Republic of Poland, Frank Spula , President of Polish American Congress
and Polish National Alliance and Joyce Liput Gallagher representing the
Mayor of Chicago were some of the dignitaries who said a few remarks on
General Pulaski.
LaToya Dixon, Manager of
Community Relations for Jewel-Osco presented $5,000.00 to the PMA and
awarded five, $1,000.00 scholarships to high school seniors and college
students who will be continuing their undergraduate studies. This year
Jewel-Osco partnered with the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc.
Amanda Babst, Executive
Vice President of Retail Sales of National City Bank also presented
$5,000.00 to the Polish Museum of America. During these difficult economic
times this money is needed more than ever and we thank Jewel-Osco and
National City Bank for their interest and very generous support.
This presentation was then
followed by the Council of Educators in Polonia announcement of winners of
their contests on General Pulaski. President, Dr. Lidia Filus called on
Hanna Kapica, Ken Gill, Czeslawa Kolak and Sr. Edward to call the students
forward to receive their awards. After the awards were given out, Dr. Filus
presented Wallace Ozog, PMA Chairman, a check for $2,500.00 for Life
Membership for the Council of Educators in Polonia. Dr. Filus stated that
the Polish Museum of America is “our” museum with many beautiful treasures
found nowhere else and it is the responsibility of the Polish community to
support it. She hoped that more would follow in their footsteps and become
Life Members.
The program concluded with
the wreath laying ceremony before the huge picture of Pulaski at Savannah,
the singing of God Bless America and the taking of many photos. Guests were
invited to the first floor social hall and dignitaries went to the second
floor Board Room for a reception of pastries and pierogis. PMA and PRCUA’s
good friend, Kasia Bober, owner of Kasia’s Deli donated the pierogis for
which we are most thankful for her generosity.
Pulaski Celebration 2009
ended with a banquet in the evening at Jolly Inn sponsored by Polish
American Congress, Illinois Division. The program consisted of the Polish
Scouts speaking on Pulaski’s contributions to America and Poland followed by
the Chopin Singers and ending with a performance by the PNA Wici Dancers.
Dignitaries gave their last brief comments on Pulaski and winners of the PAC
coloring contest for students in grades 5 to 8 were announced.
It was a very busy weekend
in Chicago with so many celebrations honoring General Casimir Pulaski.
However, Chicago’s Polish community is very proud of this hero and wants all
nationalities to know about him and his accomplishments.

February was a cold and
snowy month and it was also a month of much activity. On Saturday, February
7, the Polish American Medical Society held its annual Physicians’ Ball at
the Drake hotel in Downtown Chicago. My husband and I had the privilege to
sit with the Hon. and Mrs. Zygmunt Matynia, Consul General of the Republic
of Poland, Dr. Bronislaw Orawiec, President of the Polish American Medical
Society of Chicago and his wife, Dr. Grazyna Orawiec, Hon. and Mrs. Marvin
Brustin, Consul General of Nepals, the former General Consul of the Republic
of Poland of Chicago, Senator Franczek Adamczyk and honored guest, Marek
Nawara, Marshal of the Malopolska Region. Mr. Nawara was recognized for his
outstanding leadership in fostering cooperation between the Malopolska
Region and the State of Illinois.
The evening consisted of a
silent auction with a variety of items to bid on and also a raffle. Carl
Linden and his orchestra entertained before dinner and Iwona Tober and
Leszek Swidzinski from Poland presented an enjoyable musical program of
popular international songs after dinner followed by a performance by the
PNA Wici Folk Ensemble. The evening ended with guests dancing to the music
of the “Kings”.
This year the proceeds of
this gala event went towards the Examination Fund of the Polish American
Medical Society in Chicago and the Polish Film Festival in America. Last
year the Polonia Dance Ensemble of the Polish Roman Catholic Union of
America received a donation. It was a very enjoyable evening and the
committee should be commended for a job well done.
On Thursday, February 19
Illinois/Indiana Women’s Division of PRCUA held its annual quarterly
meeting. Election of officers took place. Congratulations are extended to
Geraldine Kowalski, President, Mary Brzezniak, Vice-President, Lillian
Stempinski, Treasurer and Diane Cortesi, Sergeant-at-Arms. Any lady who is a
member of PRCUA can become a delegate of their society to attend these
meetings. This is a way of getting out of the house, socializing and having
a nice luncheon. The next meeting of the Illinois/Indiana Women’s Division
of the PRCUA will take place in May. Watch the Narod Polski for the date. It
would be nice of you to join us. This is a way of meeting other PRCUA
members.
On Saturday, February 21
the Southwest Center of Polish Dancing of the PRCUA hosted a Dinner Dance at
Candle Light Banquets. Close to 200 people were in attendance enjoying the
delicious food, the good music and the intermingling of fun and friendship.
Fifty-one students will be attending the 2009 Iwonicz Zdroj Dance Festival
in Poland this summer and proceeds of this fundraiser will go towards their
expenses. Besides my husband and I, National Officers in attendance were
National Director of District 8, Krystyna Lech and her husband Ted, National
Director of District 8, James Rustik and National Director of District 9,
Elizabeth Grabowski and her husband Konrad. A special thank you is extended
to the committee for the time that they put into making this event an
enjoyable and successful fundraiser.
On Sunday, February 22 we
returned to Candle Light Banquets for District 8’s annual luncheon. This
year the luncheon was titled “Sweetheart Celebration” honoring four lovely
ladies who have devoted many years to PRCUA. Mary Brzezniak, Sue Buras,
Diane Cortesi and Michaeline Drust know what “giving of themselves” mean.
These energetic ladies have worked for the good of PRCUA and its members for
several years in different capacities. Their immediate families were present
to honor them for their years of service and also their PRCUA family.
Students from Wesoly Lud showed their appreciation through their beautiful
dance performance. Each of the honorees received a bouquet of roses from the
committee, as well as a picture of themselves drawn by a PRCUA student. I
congratulate Mary, Sue, Diane and Michaeline for their dedication and
commitment and may they set the example for the younger generation to follow
in their footsteps to continue to work and promote the Polish Roman Catholic
Union of America.
Just to mention that this
is the second time that District 8 honored members for their years of
service to PRCUA. The first group of honorees consisted of Clara Winiecki,
Bernice Hyatt, Martha Kwiatt and Regina Ocwieca. Since then, Clara and
Regina have passed away. Bernice and Martha were present at the affair.
We left District 8’s
luncheon and drove to St. Ferdinand Parish to attend the 8th annual Costume
Ball sponsored by PRCUA “Polonia” and “Mala Polonia” and Preschool
“Krasnoludki” Dance Groups. This event, attended by over 200 people included
games, raffles, music and dancing for children and adults. The children and
a few parents were dressed in a variety of costumes from witches to pirates
to princesses. The girls wore fancy gowns and fancier shoes. There was an
abundance of delicious food prepared by the parents. It was a fun time for
children and adults alike. A special thanks is extended to Director Anna
Krysinski, her mother, Pani Celina and the many parents who worked together
to have this event so that their children can have the opportunity to
experience this Carnival Ball just before Lent begins.
On Tuesday, February 24 the
PRCUA and PMA employees celebrated Paczki Day thanks to the Executive Board
who provided a nice selection of these delicious and high-calorie treats. I
think “the paczki” was considered “the lunch” for many of the employees on
this day.
The next day, Wednesday,
February 25, the employees had the opportunity to begin the Lenten season
with the placement of ashes in the form of a cross on their foreheads.
Special thanks is extended to Rev. Stanislaw Jankowski, Pastor of St. Hedwig
Parish for taking time from his busy schedule to accommodate us. It is
always a pleasure to have Fr. Jankowski come to the office with his bright
smile and laughter.
At this time, I would like
to congratulate Kathryn Rosypal, Executive Editor of the Narod Polski for
her 20th Anniversary as Editor. Kathryn is very interested in promoting
Polish history, culture and traditions as shown in her articles in the Narod
Polski. I have worked with her for the past ten years in the writing and
design of workbooks, flyers, information guides, articles and much more. I
must say that we have been a team who introduced much promotional printed
material promoting our Polish heritage. I thank her for her time and her
willingness to help. Kathryn is very dedicated and she generously gives of
her talents in promoting Polish heritage, not only in Polonia, but also
among all ethnic groups. We are very fortunate to have Kathryn. May she
continue to show interest in promoting the Polish heritage for future
generations.
I hope that many of our
PRCUA members will attend the 1st Easter Polish Cultural Day on Saturday,
March 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This event is for adults and children,
age 7 and up. Planning has been step by step but with each step I am getting
excited about it. Those attending will have the opportunity to learn Palm
Weaving, Pisanki and Egg Painting. A presentation on Easter food and its
meaning will take place, as well as, a sampling of some of the traditional
Easter food. “Pick an Egg” and you have a chance to win a prize. If you are
hungry, you will be served a hot dog, chips and beverage. If you want an
Easter gift for a friend or a family member, wooden eggs from Poland and
more will be available for purchase. All of this for $20.00 for adults and
$15.00 for children between age 7 and 15. Can’t beat the price! Space is
limited so get your reservation in ASAP. Payment guarantees your spot.
On Saturday, April 25, a
Genealogy Workshop including lunch will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. Cost is $30.00. Space is limited. Payment guarantees your spot.
For further information or
registration form for either event, please review the the
Calendar of Events above. Proceeds from both of
these events go to the PRCUA Education Fund, Inc. More and more students are
applying for scholarships and your participation will make a difference.
Spring is around the
corner. Hopefully, the days will start getting warmer, the grass will get
greener and you will hear the birds chirping. If you are bored, please come
down to PRCUA and participate in the Polish Easter Cultural Day or the
Genealogy Workshop. Stay warm! Think Spring! Until next time!
ARTICLE 1
(Photos) January is a time of resolutions for the
New Year, a time for diets, a time to clean closets and drawers and a
time to recuperate from the holidays. I have not made any resolutions
for 2009 because they never last long for me. I try to go on a diet but
there is still a continuation of many dinners during January. I have
started cleaning my closets and drawers and I have found time to sit,
relax, read a book and watch television, as well as, attending many
events during January.
On Sunday, January 4, 2009, my husband and
I attended the Polish Highlanders Oplatek. Mr. Stanley Zagata is the
President of the Polish Highlanders and also a member of PRCUA. The food
was abundant and the performance by the children was great.
On Sunday, January 11, the Polish Falcons
held their Oplatek. This was a time to socialize with our fellow
fraternal and to pay tribute to their deceased members. We also enjoyed
a superb performance by Kalejdoskop Children’s Polish Dance Company
whose choreographer is PRCUA member, Barbara Eckert.
For our next social event, the Orchard
Lake Ambassador Ball, that took place in Rochester Michigan on January
17, traveling was not easy. The roads were slippery with snow and in
some areas there were blizzard conditions with many cars and trucks in
ditches. However, we survived our trip on Friday but when we woke up on
Saturday, the snow flakes were rapidly descending from the skies. We
planned on visiting PRCUA Society #162 in Wyandotte Michigan for their
Installation Dinner and also PRCUA Mala Polska Dance Ensemble for their
Presentation Ball, however, the snow was coming down quite heavily and
the roads were miserable so we decided to make our appearance only at
the Ambassador’s Ball where the guests slowly arrived because of the bad
road conditions. There were about ten people who decided not to attend.
PRCUA National President, Wallace Ozog
presented a check to Rev. Timothy Whalen, Chancellor of the Orchard Lake
Schools for $35,000.00 that is part of the PRCUA Matching Funds Program
for the seminary. During these trying times, it is difficult to
financially assist such worthwhile causes, however, whatever amount is
given is appreciated and does make a difference for our young
seminarians.
Before we left for Chicago, President Ozog
and Vice-President Bob Bielenda visited Sr. Kujawa, President of Madonna
College and presented her with a check for $10,000.00 as part of the
PRCUA Matching Fund Program. The dedicated Polish community of Felicians
have devoted many years to this institution and PRCUA is happy to help
them financially to continue their mission of educating future leaders.
On Friday, January 23, the PMA held a
celebration in honor of the 60th anniversary of the death of Mieczyslaw
Haiman, the first Curator of the Polish Museum of America. It was a very
simple but moving memorial that was dedicated to the work and life of
Mr. Haiman. A wreath was placed in front of his portrait; Dr. Teresa
Kaczorowska gave a Power Point presentation on her book, “The Herodotus
of American Polonia, Mieczyslaw Haiman 1888-1949”; the Polish actor,
Stanislaw Malec, presented a few poems penned by Haiman; Consul Zygmunt
Matyna gave brief remarks; Archivist Halina Misterka, displayed a very
informative exhibit on Haiman’s life. Afterwards everyone had the
opportunity to mingle, to talk to the author, to take photos and to have
light refreshments.
The following day, my husband and I
attended another program sponsored by the Kosciuszko Foundation, Chicago
Chapter where Dr. Teresa Kaczorowska spoke about her book at the Polonia
Book store. At this time, Wallace Ozog, Chairman of the Board of the
Polish Museum of America, presented a Legacy Life Member plaque and Life
Member lapel pin to Dr. Lidia Filus, President of the Kosciuszko
Foundation, Chicago Chapter. It was most fitting to make this
presentation at this time because Dr. Kaczorowska received financial
assistance for her book from the Kosciuszko Foundation. Dr. Filus
encouraged those present to consider to become Life Members of the
Polish Museum because it has many Polish treasures that no other
institution possesses and it is our responsibility, as Poles, to
preserve them for future generations.
That same morning we traveled to East
Chicago Illinois to the St. Joseph Carmelite Home for Children. National
PRCUA Director, Elizabeth Grabowski raised some money for this
institution at the Indiana/Illinois Women’s Division Oplatek by having a
raffle. Mrs. Grabowski, her daughter Agata, Barbara Pawlowski, my
husband and I visited the home and brought with us crocheted hats and
scarves made by my ninety-five year old mother, Beanie Babies, Activity
books on Pulaski, the Polish Museum and Chicago Early Settlers, Polish
candy and lotion, powder and shampoo for the infants. It was a very
emotional and moving experience for me. The nuns were young, happy and
very loving. You could not help to give hugs to these sisters who devote
their lives to children who come from broken homes and in some cases are
very difficult to handle.
The home has about one hundred children
from infants to age 18. Some stay for a few days and others stay longer.
Most come from broken homes. I asked sister what are their needs besides
money. She said that the children are always in need of stockings,
underwear, towels, lotion and shampoo. If any society needs a project,
this would be a very worthwhile one.
The third event that we attended on
Saturday, January 24 was the PNA Chicago Society Installation Dinner.
Congratulations are extended to its new President Charles Kosmoso and
his fellow officers and to Conrad Miczko, Chairman. The crowd was
smaller than usual but the food was delicious and everyone who attended
had a good time socializing and dancing to the orchestra of PRCUA
member, Anthony Kawalkowski.
February began with the final Oplatek that
was sponsored by the Polish Veterans of WWII, D. II. We sat with the
Hon. and Mrs. Zygmunt Matynia, PMA Treasurer Camille Kopielski and
President of the Polish Veterans, Jerzy Pasinski. Mr. Pasinski,
ninety-two years young and who looked much younger was very hospitable.
A group of children from the Polish Scouts put on a small performance
that was done with much enthusiasm and was enjoyed by the audience.
Easter will soon be upon us. On Saturday
March 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. an “Easter Polish Cultural Day”
will take place in the PRCUA Social Hall. This new program is for adults
and for children starting at age 7. It will be a time for each
participant to experience various Easter customs, to be introduced to
the Easter meal and its meaning, to sample Easter food, to receive a
light lunch, to have a chance to win a prize by “picking an egg” and to
have the opportunity to purchase wooden Easter Eggs and more. Cost is
$20.00 per adult and $15.00 per child (age 7-15). All proceeds will
benefit the PRCUA Education Fund. Space is limited. For a reservation
form, go to www.prcua.org, click on News & Events, scroll down to
Calendar & Events. I hope that many PRCUA members, their children and
grandchildren will participate in this “1st Easter Polish Cultural Day”
where you will learn about your Polish heritage.
During 2008 there were many PRCUA events
that I attended and I took photos of our members. However, due to
limited space, they were not published in the Narod. So,
some of them. Enjoy! Stay warm!
